AFC Cup: Binh Duong reach quarter-finals after trouncing Kedah 8-2

Becamex Binh Duong became Vietnam’s first team to reach the AFC quarter-finals after demolishing Kedah (Malaysia) 8-2 at Go Dau stadium yesterday.

 

Defending champions Binh Duong who topped Group H started the game with great confidence to win, bringing pressure to bear on Kedah who ranked second in group G.

In front of 20,000 fans, the hosts produced a series of attacks, creating several chances to score. In the 18th minute, fullback Helio opened the scoring with his header from Vu Phong’s fine cross. Two minutes later it was Vu Phong who scored the second goal for Binh Duong. In the 38th minute Huynh Kesley danced round one Malaysian defender and shot straight at Kedah goalkeeper Helni Elias. But one minute later, Kesley widened the gap for Binh Duong with his close range shot before substitute Duc Thien fired the fourth.

 

After the break, Binh Duong continued  dominating the game. Philani and Duc Thien missed two chances in the 63rd and 64th minutes to score.

 

Kedah skipper narrowed the gap with his super shot in the 70th minute. But a minute later Huynh Kesley fired home from Duc Thien’s cross. Anh Duc scored the sixth in the 79th minute before Kesley fired the seventh and eighth goals in the 78th  and last minute. Kedah had their second goal from the penalty spot in the 89th  minute.

 

Kesley became the best player who scored four times in the 10-goal match.
