Both teams are vying to win their maiden AFC U23 Asian Cup title with Vietnam having finished runners-up in 2018, while Saudi Arabia came second in 2013 and 2020.
While Gong is aware that Vietnam will face a stern test against a Saudi Arabian side who impressed in the group stage, he is confident his charges will come out on top.
“Saudi Arabia are really formidable both in defence and attack,” said Gong. “They come into the tie with three clean sheets and have scored seven goals.
“The team is very focused on attacking football and that’s why we must try to match their performance on the field.”
Vietnam showed fighting spirit throughout the group stage, which included roaring back to force a 1-1 draw against defending champions Korea Republic on Matchday Two.
“I utilised all 23 players for all the group games as every matchday had a different tactical approach. For Saudi Arabia, I will be using a new plan. The players have been performing to my expectations and I trust them to deliver in this crucial tie.
“Saudi Arabia have, no doubt, really good players in their starting 11 as well as on the bench. The two new players will certainly add more attacking options. However, we also have talented players at our disposal and we are prepared for all scenarios, even penalties.”
Having seen his side top Group D with seven points, Saudi Arabia head coach Saad Al Shehri received a further boost with the addition of Firas Al Buraikan and Hassan Tambakti, who were with the senior Saudi Arabia national team in Spain.
“We have been preparing well ahead of our match against Vietnam,” said Al Shehri. “We have remained focused on our short-term goal which is to reach the semi-finals.
“Firas Al Buraikan and Hassan Tambakti have joined the squad from the national team training camp and they will certainly add options for us against Vietnam. All my players are fit and ready to play with the exception of Turki Al Ammar, who is still doubtful.”
Saudi Arabia will, however, be without Saud Abdulhamid and Ibrahim Mahnashi, who picked up their second yellow cards in their 3-0 win over United Arab Emirates on Matchday Three.
“We have a big squad and I’m confident that we can still keep the same level of intensity despite losing the two players. Vietnam play very similarly to Korea Republic and are a good counter-attacking team but we will be ready for them.”
