The match between Vietnam and the Philippines was delayed by around 30 minutes due to heavy rain shortly before kick-off. The slippery pitch made it difficult for both teams to execute their game plans.

The Philippines started the match more proactively, repeatedly looking to exploit the right flank. In the second minute, Việt Anh had to clear the ball behind for a corner following a dangerous move from the opponents. Two minutes later, Minh Hoàng produced a skilful run to win a free-kick for Vietnam, but Tiến Anh’s direct effort was off target.

Vietnam responded in the sixth minute when Hoàng Hên had a chance to score, but his attempted chip lacked the required precision. Two minutes later, Bailley had an effort during a promising attacking move, but the subsequent final pass failed to find its target.

After taking the lead, Vietnam slowed the tempo, organised a compact defensive structure and looked to create opportunities on the counter-attack. The Philippines enjoyed more possession but struggled to find a way through to goalkeeper Patrik Lê Giang.

Vietnam created a few more notable chances towards the end of the first half. In the 44th minute, a Philippines player nearly turned the ball into his own net following a corner routine between Hoàng Hên and Tiến Anh. In the final seconds of the half, Lê Giang failed to hold onto the ball, but Việt Anh reacted quickly to clear the danger.

The first half ended with Vietnam holding a 1-0 lead.

After the restart, the game remained closely contested. Head coach Kim Sang Sik’s side continued to take the initiative in attack, while the Philippines looked to create opportunities on the counter. In the 58th minute, Đình Bắc accelerated past two defenders before getting a shot away, but the Philippines goalkeeper reacted quickly to make the save.

Two minutes later, Xuân Son picked up an injury and was forced to leave the pitch, with Hai Long coming on as his replacement. Just four minutes later, the Philippines came close to an equaliser when Aguinaldo headed towards goal from Schneider’s corner, but the effort did not find the net. Vietnam then strengthened their attacking options with Khoa Ngô and Minh Khoa introduced from the bench.

In the 75th minute, following a quick transition by Vietnam, Nyholm fouled Khoa Ngô and was initially shown a straight red card. However, after a VAR review, the referee overturned the decision, rescinded the red card and did not award Vietnam a free-kick.

In the 83rd minute, the Philippines found the back of the net following a move set up by Reyes. Once again, VAR intervened and, after reviewing the incident, the referee ruled that the goalscorer was in an offside position, disallowing the goal.

The closing stages were tense as the Philippines threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Lê Giang made a series of important saves, while Việt Anh also stood out with timely interceptions and clearances. Vietnam held firm until the final whistle.

The 1-0 victory, secured by Đình Bắc’s lone goal, gave Vietnam a positive start to their FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 campaign and a valuable confidence boost ahead of their clash with Thailand on 29 September.
