2024 is a key year for national teams
To continue preparing effectively for the national teams with important tasks in the last five months of 2024, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has developed detailed training and competition plans for each team.
In the first half of 2024, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) continued to focus on the national teams by sending them to various international invitationals. For example, the U19 team participated in a friendly tournament in China, the women’s futsal team competed in an international invitational in China, and the U16 team undertook short-term training camps. To ensure effective preparation for the national teams as they approach critical tasks in the last five months of 2024, VFF has developed detailed training and competition plans for each team.
* Men’s national team
VFF and the head coach have developed a plan for the last six months of 2024 to prepare for important tournaments, namely the AFF Cup and the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. According to the plan, the team will have short training camps during FIFA Days (September, October, and November) with friendly matches and international invitational tournaments against high-quality opponents. The team’s goal is to reach the final of the AFF Cup by the end of this year.
* Women’s national team
In 2024, there will be no international duties for the women’s national football team, as international women’s football tournaments are not taking place. The AFF Women’s Championship has been rescheduled to 2025.
The leadership of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has assessed that 2024 is a period for preparing the women’s national football teams in the region, especially the Vietnam women’s national team. Therefore, VFF will continue to invest in the “diamond girls.” According to the plan, the Vietnam women’s national team will undergo a training camp abroad and is expected to participate in an international invitational tournament in China. This preparation is aimed at the significant tasks for 2025, which include competing in the 33rd SEA Games, the AFF Women’s Championship, and the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers. During a meeting with VFF President Trần Quốc Tuấn, senior officials from the German and Spanish football federations emphasized their readiness to support Vietnamese football and welcomed the Vietnam women’s national team for training camps.
* Men’s futsal national team
In April 2024, the men’s futsal team participated in the AFC Futsal Championship. Although they reached the top 8, they did not secure a spot in the FIFA Futsal World Cup. According to the plan, the team will compete in the AFF Futsal Championship and the AIMG6 (Indoor Games), both held in Thailand in November 2024. Their goals are to reach the final of the AFF Championship and finish in the top 4 at the AIMG6.
* Women’s futsal national team
At the end of June 2024, the Vietnam women’s futsal team gathered and participated in an invitational tournament in China. In this tournament, the team competed against well-known women’s futsal teams, including China (Vietnam won 4-2), Iran, ranked 8th in the world (draw 2-2), and Uzbekistan (draw 5-5), ultimately finishing in second place overall.
According to the plan, before participating in the AIMG6 (November 21-28, 2024, in Thailand), the team will have two friendly matches against high-quality opponents. The team’s goal is to finish in the top 4 and aim for a medal.
* Youth teams
In 2024, the U16 and U19 teams will compete in the qualifiers for the U17/U20 AFC Championships with the goal of securing spots in the final rounds of these tournaments. To achieve this goal, VFF has planned to send the teams to various international invitational tournaments to give young players more opportunities for competitive play, improve their skills, and gain experience. Specifically, in the first half of the year, the U15/U17 national teams underwent long-term training camps; the U16 women’s national team was given the opportunity to participate in a friendly tournament in Turkey; and the U19 team took part in an international friendly tournament in China.
To prepare effectively for the U20 AFC Championship qualifiers in September 2024, VFF plans to send the U19 team to Japan for a training camp. During this camp, the team will seek high-quality opponents for competitive matches. Similarly, the U16 national team is expected to gather at the end of August and participate in an international invitational tournament in China, followed by a training camp in Japan. These steps are crucial preparations for the U17 Asian Championship qualifiers in 2026.
The U23 team will also continue with training camps and international friendly matches to gain more competitive experience.
The opportunity for teams to train abroad and play friendlies against high-quality opponents is a result of VFF effectively implementing its policy of strengthening and expanding international relations with advanced football nations.
