Head coach Tran Minh Chien: “The ASEAN U16 Championship is a significant learning experience for the U16 Vietnam players”
U16 Vietnam suffered a 0-5 defeat against host team U16 Indonesia in the third-place playoff of the 2024 ASEAN U16 Championship. Speaking after the match, Coach Tran Minh Chien admitted the failure of himself and his players. He also emphasized that the tournament provided a significant learning experience for the young players.
Head coach Tran Minh Chien said: “This is a result that I didn’t expect. The U16 Vietnam players played evenly and balanced from the beginning until near the end of the first half. However, a momentary lapse in concentration, a lack of fierce contesting in the final minutes resulted in conceding two goals. Clearly, U16 Vietnam gifted goals and the victory to U16 Indonesia.”
Head coach Tran Minh Chien attributed the decline in physical fitness as the reason why the young players couldn’t maintain control of themselves afterwards. “As you saw, youth football can be unpredictable. Two goals happened too quickly at the end of the first half. With decreasing physical fitness, the players couldn’t maintain self-control, leading to unwarranted mistakes. Thanks to this result, the coaching staff and players will reassess the capabilities of each position. I will also reevaluate my own coaching abilities,” expressed Head coach Tran Minh Chien.
Head coach Tran Minh Chien emphasized that the tournament was a significant learning experience for the young players of U16 Vietnam: “They need to accumulate experience and improve their skills through more matches.”
Regarding the upcoming plans for U16 Vietnam, Head coach Tran Minh Chien outlined: “After today’s match, we will take a one-week break. The team will then participate in the National U17 Championship 2024 from July 11th to July 24th. After this final round, we will focus on attending a friendly tournament organized by China. Following that, U16 Vietnam will go to Japan for training to prepare for the 2025 AFC U17 Asian Cup qualifiers.”
