Stalemate for Cambodia and Vietnam in ASEAN U16
SOLO (25 June 2024) – Cambodia and Vietnam battled to a scintillating 1-1 draw in their crucial Group B tie of the ASEAN Under-16 Boys’ Championship 2024 here tonight at the Sriwedari Stadium.
Following a first-half deadlock, it was Vietnam who went ahead in the 57th minute through Nguyen Viet Long before Cambodia replied off Phan Vreak five minutes later.
Following the draw against U16 Cambodia, Coach Tran Minh Chien commented, “In this match, U16 Vietnam had two changes in the starting lineup due to injuries. We didn’t want to risk playing them from the beginning. Fortunately, we didn’t lose and weren’t punished despite wasting many chances. In the last two matches, especially in the first 16 minutes, there were plenty of opportunities for our players but they weren’t efficiently capitalized on, which is regrettable.”
“After this match, we will analyze the footage to prepare tactics for the game against U16 Myanmar. As I mentioned earlier, teams like Cambodia, Brunei, and even Timor-Leste are getting closer in level. U16 Myanmar is one of the strong teams in the group stage. They had the upper hand against Cambodia but paid the price for a moment of carelessness. In the upcoming final group stage match, we will focus on preparing the players psychologically to perform better,” added Coach Tran Minh Chien.
On June 28 at 3 PM, U16 Vietnam will face U16 Myanmar in their last group stage match. Coach Tran Minh Chien reaffirmed, “Currently, we are fully concentrating on the match against Myanmar and not thinking about the semifinals or finals.”
In the meantime, Myanmar blasted Brunei Darussalam 8-1 for their first win in the group.
Determined to make up for their close 2-1 loss to Cambodia in their opening tie a few days earlier, Myanmar had a brace each from captain Kyaw Thiha (7th and 27th minute), Thura Min Thant (8th and 23rd) and Myo Nanda Aung (34th and 56th) to thank for the win.
The other goal for Myanmar was scored by Kyaw Nyi Nyi in the 18th minute.
