The Vietnamese women”s team failed to reach their target of finishing third in Group B of the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, as they lost 3-1 to Chinese Taipei in their final game on December 7. Bui Thi Tuyet Mai levelled the score but it was what the Vietnamese side could do in the match.

The Vietnamese team had a change in their starting XI in their final game at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, against Chinese Taipei, with striker Do Thi Hai Anh partnering Bui Thi Tuyet Mai, who scored the first goal at the Asian Games in the match against the Republic of Korea, for the first time.

Despite their great determination to win their final face-saving game, the Vietnamese side went 1-0 down after seven minutes. After Van Thi Thanh”s foul on Chuang Shu Mei, Chiu Fu Yu”s far post freekick found Tsai Li Chen, unmarked, in the penalty box, who headed home the opener.

Twelve minutes later, striker Tuyet Mai scored her second goal at the Asian Games. Captain Doan Kim Chi found Tuyet Mai with a pinpoint cross from the right flank and Tuyet Mai stretched to nod the ball past goalkeeper Chen Yi Ju.

Getting rid of heavy pressure after going down 1-0, the Vietnamese team controlled the game. Tuyet Mai came close as she, sandwiched by Lu Hui Mei and Yu Pei Wen, headed over the bar after Kim Hong”s cross.

Four minutes from half-time, Tsai Li Chen restored a one goal lead as she headed in Lee Hsueh Hua”s cross. Tsai beat centreback Nguyen Ngoc Anh in the air to nod the ball to the underside of the crossbar.

Hai Anh had a good opportunity to level the score as she dispossessed a Chinese Taipei defender before shot the ball wide in a head-to-head situation.

After the break, the Vietnamese teams increased their pressure, launching attacks on Chinese Taipei”s defence. However, they failed to create chances. Coach Tran Ngoc Thai Tuan”s team could not crack the defence of Chinese Taipei.

On the opposite side, goalkeeper Kieu Trinh had to work hard to deny Shih Li Hui and Tseng Shu O.

One minute from time, Kim Chi squandered an opportunity to equalise. She ghosted past goalkeeper Chen Yi Ju and defender Yu Pei Wen but shot against the cross bar.

In the stoppage time, substitute Nguyen Thi Khanh Thu, unmarked, shot over the bar.

In a counterattack of Chinese Taipei, Ngoc Anh brought down Lu Yen Ling in the box and Lee Hseuh Hua made no mistakes in converting her spot kick.

The Vietnamese team finished the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, with three defeats. They lost 5-0 to the Democratic People”s Republic of Korea, 3-1 to the Republic of Korea and 3-1 to Chinese Taipei.
