VFF surveys facilities and conditions for grassroots women’s football development in the Mekong Delta region

In implementation of the Women’s Football Development Strategy approved by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) in June 2025, and with the support of the FIFA and UEFA Women’s Football Development Programmes, a VFF delegation conducted working visits to provinces in the Mekong Delta from 28 to 30 January 2026 to assess the current status of women’s football in three localities: Can Tho, Vinh Long and Dong Thap.

The VFF delegation included: General Secretary Nguyen Van Phu as Head of Delegation, Deputy General Secretary Nguyen Thanh Ha, along with representatives from several VFF departments, including Analysis, Coach Education & Grassroots Football, and Member Associations.

During the working programme, the delegation conducted on-site assessments of existing facilities, human resources, organizational structure, and operational conditions for grassroots women’s football activities in the localities. Based on these findings, the delegation identified provinces with strong potential and adequate conditions to receive support for the development of women’s football.

The VFF delegation also collected information to serve as a basis for developing plans on support, investment, and coordination between VFF and localities with active women’s football movements nationwide.

According to the initial assessment, all three localities have relatively stable women’s football movements. The teams operate mainly under a grassroots club and school-based model, such as Thoi Lai and Ninh Kieu (Can Tho); the Tran Truong Sinh High School Women’s Football Club (Vinh Long); and the Sen Hong Women’s Football Club, Tan Hong Commune Women’s Football Club, and Thuong Phuoc Commune Women’s Football Club (Dong Thap).

Notably, Vo Truong Toan Primary School in Can Tho has a U9–U12 group of players who are expected to be selected to participate in the UEFA/AFC-supported young women’s player development programme.

The players come from various age groups (from U9 to U19). All of them share a strong passion for football and a desire to continue participating in the sport. Some players who have shown promising potential have already been considered by the VFF youth women’s national team coaches for further development and training.

To create favorable conditions for the sustainable and systematic development of women’s football in the Mekong Delta region, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) will develop specific support plans.

VFF also hopes that local authorities, businesses, and the wider community will join hands to support the growth of women’s football in Vietnam in general, and in the Mekong Delta region in particular, so that it can continue to develop and expand in the years to come.
