Group D: Vietnam too strong for Korea Republic

Vietnam produced their best to defeat Korea Republic 5-1 in Group D of the AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ Kuwait 2022 on Wednesday.

The Southeast Asian side overcame conceding early to get a headstart in the race for a place in the quarter-finals.

Korea Republic enjoyed the best of starts at the Saad Al Abdullah Hall after scoring the fastest goal so far in Kuwait 2022 when an unmarked Shin Jong-hoon volleyed home Kim Yun-young’s corner kick within 22 seconds.

The East Asian side’s celebrations, however,  were cut short when Vietnam  equalised just a minute later from a corner kick set-piece of their own, with Nguyen Minh Tri forcing an error from Shin, with the Korean tapping the ball into the back of his own net.
As the dust of their early goals settled, it was Vietnam who controlled the pace of the match, forcing Korea Republic to find most of their opportunities from counter-attacks.
Fifteen minutes in, Tran Thai Huy’s moment of brilliance saw him dribble past two players before letting loose a superb strike that deflected off Moon Hee-Jae’s heel and bounced into the back of the net to put Vietnam ahead.

Korea Republic were relentless in search of the equaliser, with dangerman Shin’s long-range strike denied by the upright.

With Korea Republic pushing up, Vietnam took advantage of the open spaces, Minh Tri and Pham Duc Hoa teamed up in the 17th minute in a counter-attacking run, with the latter beating goalkeeper Seo from close range.

A fired up Korea Republic had better opportunities at the start of the second half with Yoo Kyung-dong and Lee Han-wool keeping Vietnam goalkeeper Ho Van Y busy, but head coach Lee Sang-jin eventually sent on Yoo Seung-mu to be their fifth attacking player in the 28th minute.

Instead, it was Vietnam who went further ahead in the 34th minute when Tran surged down the left flank, before slotting past keeper Seo from an acute angle.

Korea Republic initiated power play in the hopes of reducing their deficit, but it backfired a minute later when Nguyen Manh Dung caught Seung-mu out of position to easily score Vietnam’s fifth goal of the evening.

Vietnam face Saudi Arabia next on Friday, while Korea Republic meet Japan.
