AFC U20 WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP

Preview – Group B: Japan v Vietnam

Tashkent: Defending champions Japan are optimistic of taking the three points when they face Vietnam in their AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup™ 2024 Group B opener at the JAR Stadium on Monday.

Japan won the AFC U19 Women’s Championship six times and head coach Kano Michihisa is confident of starting their Uzbekistan 2024 campaign on a positive note.
“We are monitoring the players’ condition and also sharing tactical information as a team at the training camp and both players and staff are positively challenging themselves,” said Michihisa.
“We have called up the best of the available players.”
Standing in Japan’s way are Vietnam and Michihisa said his team will not underestimate their opponents.
“I have the impression that they (Vietnam) are a tough and tenacious team with high agility.
“However, we are always challengers, setting clear goals for individual players to grow and practicing world-class initiatives on a daily basis.”
Vietnam are making their sixth appearance in the tournament, having only reached the knockout stage of the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship twice – in 2004 and 2011.
“There are no major problems in preparation. However, our opponents are all strong teams so we still have a lot of work to do. Although there was no overseas training trip, our team were able to arrive in Uzbekistan early and get used to the cold weather,” said Vietnam head coach Ijiri Akira.
“Each person on our team is an important player. Each of us may be a lot weaker than the top players in Asia and the world but I think if we all play as key players, we can handle it well.”
Despite recognising the uphill task against Japan, Akira believes his players are capable of producing a good performance throughout the competition.
“Japan are very strong, they won the FIFA U20 World Cup (in 2018). Japan’s strengths lie in both attack and defence, all at a high level. In particular, I think Japan’s techniques are top-class
“However, I think our team spirit is very good. I don’t know how far the team will go, but I think this tournament is a great opportunity for young Vietnamese players to gain experience. I am not afraid of failure and want to take on a challenge.”
