Despite playing at home, The Cong Viettel”s performance was poor. They had a numerical advantage in most of second half when Van Hoa Haiphong”s Duc Thang was sent off on 51 minutes.
Former Vietnamese international Dang Phuong Nam won a penalty and missed as the hosts experienced a defeat scare until the 85th minute when Thanh Hai powered a low strike to the net.
After a 1-0 defeat at Quang Ninh Coal, The Cong Viettel returned home to host possible favourites Van Hoa Haiphong. However, the once most famous club in Vietnam, featured with young players, failed to convert their home advantages. They even went 1-0 down after 18 minutes.

Nguyen Van Tuan found Ngoc Thanh in the box, who raised to beat goalkeeper Nguyen Vu Dung in air to head in for Daniel back-heeling home from close range.
Going 1-0 down, The Cong Viettel made great efforts but they failed to find the net with long range finishes. Thach Bao Khanh came closest in the first half for the hosts, seeing his free-kick deflected the defending wall and missed up right.
Six minutes after the break, Duc Thang saw the red card after his foul against Van Nam as Van Hoa Haiphong went down to ten men. However, The Cong Viettel failed to convert their advantage.
In the 76th minute, Phuong Nam won a spot kick for the hosts but he failed to beat goalkeeper Dang Tuan Diep, who dived the left to block Phuong Nam”s shot.
Many home fans left the stadium as they were disappointed with the hosts” performance. The Cong Viettel avoided a back-to-back defeat as fullback Thanh Hai fired home the equalisers with five minutes to go.
An upset occurred in Tay Ninh when the hosts beat division leaders An Giang 2-0. Also, Dong Nai failed to take a good opportunity to go clear as they were held to a goalless draw by Da My Nghe Saigon.
On March 18, Tien Giang earned their first point after a 1-1 draw with Can Tho in a southwestern derby.
Sergio opened the scoring for the host after 14 minutes. However, his efforts were cancelled out three minutes later by Hai Duong, who equalised.
