Sports officials said on June 7 that Vietnam will send a 1,000-member team to the 24th Southeast Asia (SEA) Games in Thailand this December.

The team will be comprised of coaches, trainers, staff, doctors and more than 800 athletes and accounts for one-sixth of the event”s total participants.

The announcement was made after the Games” organising board said all countries must send their official list of members by October 8.

Vietnamese athletes are set to compete in 36 out of the games” 43 sporting events and will hopefully bring home around 70 gold medals and post a top three finish, according to the Vietnam Olympics Committee (VOC).

Bodybuilding, polo and squash have been added to the roster along with more medal categories in the wushu, gymnastics and shooting events.

Two years ago, Vietnam came in third place with 71 golds at the SEA Games in the Philippines. As SEA Games host in 2003, the nation did even better with 155 golds.

Vietnamese athletes will likely win gold medals again in wushu, karate, diving, gymnastics, billiards & smooker and canoeing if they continue to improve on their training and ditness, said VOC”s vice chairman and general secretary, Hoang Vinh Giang.

The games are scheduled to begin on December 6 and end on December 15.

Though the event”s opening ceremony is slated for December 5, football and shooting competitions are scheduled to begin on November 29.
