SV Werder Bremen brings a strong squad to Hanoi for a friendly match with the Vietnam women’s national team

On the morning of May 14, the SV Werder Bremen women’s football club arrived in Hanoi. The team will have two days to prepare before playing a friendly match against the Vietnam women’s national team.

The German women’s football club has brought 26 players and 9 members of the coaching staff to Vietnam. Head coach Thomas Horsch holds the Vietnam women’s national team (ranked 37th in the world) in high regard. Therefore, he has selected a squad made up of Werder Bremen’s key players. The most notable name is Larissa Mühlhaus. The 22-year-old forward has scored 8 goals for Bremen in this season’s competition. Last year, playing for Hamburg, Larissa Mühlhaus netted 22 goals and won the top scorer title in Germany’s second-tier women’s league.

In addition, Werder Bremen’s women’s squad includes Juliane Wirtz, the older sister of German international Florian Wirtz — the standout player who helped Leverkusen win the 2024/25 Bundesliga title. Juliane Wirtz plays as a midfielder and has made 19 official appearances for Werder Bremen, scoring one goal.

The height of the Werder Bremen women’s players is also quite impressive. They have two center-backs — Lara Schmidt and Hanna Nemeth — both standing at 1.80 meters tall. Most of the Werder Bremen players are also over 1.60 meters. Naturally, the physical advantage of the German team will pose a significant challenge for the Vietnam women’s national team. However, this is also a valuable opportunity for players like Hoàng Thị Loan, Tuyết Dung, Hải Yến, and Ngọc Minh Chuyên to sharpen their physicality and improve their ability to compete against taller and stronger opponents.

During their three-day stay in Vietnam, the SV Werder Bremen is accommodated at a five-star hotel. The German players also took the opportunity to enjoy some light snacks and get their first impressions of the streets of Hanoi.

Werder Bremen has just concluded their campaign in the German Women’s Bundesliga. The team finished 7th after 22 rounds, with 9 wins, 2 draws, and 11 losses. Over the course of the season, Bremen scored 28 goals and conceded 39.

The match between the Vietnam women’s national team and Werder Bremen will take place at 7:00 PM on May 16 at Hang Day Stadium. This event is held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany.

This special sporting event is not only an opportunity for both teams to compete and enhance their professional level but also contributes to strengthening the cooperative relationship and cultural exchange between Vietnam and Germany through football. Additionally, the match reflects the proactive preparation of the Vietnam women’s team ahead of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers.

Notably, playing against a well-established and tradition-rich team like Werder Bremen promises to provide valuable experience for the entire Vietnamese squad.

Speaking about the match, Mr. Nguyễn Văn Phú – General Secretary of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), said:

“This match is part of the preparation plan for the national women’s team’s important tasks in 2025. This year is a busy one for Vietnamese women’s football, with many international tournaments. The VFF is always striving to create the best possible conditions for the team to compete against high-quality opponents, thereby helping the players gain valuable experience and strengthen their competitive mindset.”

He also emphasized that this is a great opportunity for fans in Hanoi to watch and cheer for the Red-shirted girls in person, while also boosting the national women’s team’s spirit as they aim to conquer the continental stage.

Mr. Clemens Fritz, Sporting Director of Werder Bremen, said:
“We are very pleased to participate in the activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany. For our players, this trip is another great highlight in their careers following the final match held on May 1st. We look forward to an exciting and high-level match against the Vietnam women’s national team.”
