AFC General Secretary Dato’ Alex Soosay commended the members of the Vietnam football fan clubs for turning up in large numbers to support the teams and making the AFC Futsal Championship a grand success.

The Phu Tho Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City was full to its capacity when Japan retained the title beating Iran in a thrilling shootout 3-0 after both the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of extra-time.

“Usually, the interest of fans recedes following the exit of the host team but the fan clubs gave the other teams an atmosphere like home, which is really incredible,” Dato’ Alex said in a statement issued by the AFC.

“It was amazing to see the fan club members divided themselves to join the fans of Iran and Japan so that both the teams have vociferous Vietnamese support,” he added.

He hoped that the fan club members would also embrace AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which will begin in the same city on May 14.

“I am hopeful that these fans will attend the matches in Thong Nhat and Binh Duong stadiums staring May 14 and create a similar atmosphere,” he added.

He also praised the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) for their flawless organization of the competition saying this was the result of their past experiences of hosting many international competitions.
