Before that, at the 71st FIFA Congress in May, a clear majority of FIFA’s Member Associations voted in favour of a feasibility study to be carried out on potential biennial men’s and women’s World Cups, together with an exploration of other global football development matters.

At the same time, the current International Match Calendars for women and men are set to expire at the end of 2023 and 2024 respectively. It is therefore necessary for the new calendars to be discussed and agreed by the end of 2021 in order to give enough time for the football world to prepare and, if necessary, adapt to the new calendars.

The summit will be the first of several opportunities for us to exchange on these matters in the coming months. This process is about consulting in the widest possible way and giving everyone a voice with complete freedom and without undue pressure. It started with players and coaches, legends from all over the world and will involve fans from all around the globe, players’ unions, clubs, leagues, confederations and, obviously, all 211 FIFA Member Associations, who will ultimately decide in a democratic process what the future of football should be.

With the host of FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA General Secretary Fatma Saumoura, all members discussed the feasibility to be carried out on potential biennial men’s and women’s World Cups; the idea of global women football competition; future of FIFA’s youth competitions. After the speech of FIFA President Infantino, these topics were presented by Mr. Arsène Wenger – FIFA Chief of Global Football Development and Ms. Jill Ellis – the two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning coach from USA.

This summit is a part of the program with all member associations and relevant units. This is the first step and FIFA will continue to do other steps to listen and discuss with all members about the important topics of region and global football.
