At the 11th minute defender, Baddrol Bakhtiar headed a goal after a difficult pass from winger Nguyen Quang Tinh. Viet Nam, although having the early lead, were unable to hold on to their advantage, allowing a drawing goal for Malaysia in the first extra-time minute of the first half.

Both sides brought their “A” game in the second half, pushing hard for the winning goal, but Viet Nam prevailed, with a goal from Tinh at the 63rd minute.

The win gave Viet Nam three points and a standing in the top of group D. In another match, Iraq drew Saudi Arabia 2-2, sharing second place.
