Vinh: Goals from Boas and Ortizan Salossa sandwiched a strike from Titus Bonai as Persipura Jayapura reached the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup with a 3-1 win at Song Lam Nghe An.

Boas Salossa opened the scoring from the spot just before the half-hour mark at Vinh Stadium and Bonai doubled the lead before half-time.

Nguyen Hong Viet pulled a goal back for the hosts in the 59th minute before Ortizan Salossa wrapped up victory for the Indonesians six minutes from the end.

Salossa, Bonai and Ian Kabes were constant threats for the visitors throughout, the latter causing right-back Tran Dinh Dong all sorts of problems and preventing the Vietnam international from getting forward to support Song Lam’s forays forward.

The hosts also opted for veteran Pham Van Quyen over Andre Fagan to replace the injured Kavin Bryan up front as they preferred to pack the midfield.

However, Song Lam‘s attacking threats were frequently halted at the edge of the Persipura box with Nguyen Quang Tinh in particular guilty of poor delivery.

Persipura went in front after 29 minutes when Song Lam conceded a penalty that Boas Salossa converted and the visitors then doubled their advantage five minutes later when Bonai found the back of the net with a powerful finish following an incisive counter-attack to establish a two-goal lead at the break.

Song Lam tried to apply more pressure on the Indonesian side after the interval but were unable to make any inroads into the deficit until just before the hour mark when Hong Viet saw an effort come back off the bar but was alert enough to slot home the rebound.

That goal served to inject new life into Song Lam and they pushed Persipura back in search of an equaliser.

However, the hosts were caught out by a swift counter-attack six minutes from time when Boas Salossa drew a number of defenders towards him on the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross towards his brother Ortizan and he made no mistake to seal Persipura’s passage into the last eight.
