Hosts restore hope after beating Indonesia 1-0
A goal in the 56th minute by Duc Duong helped hosts under-23 Vietnam beat Indonesia 1-0 on the second match day of the Bach Viet Cup on November 17,…
The hosts had two changes in starting XI with Minh Thien, whose mistake gifted Olympic Finland a 1-0 victory in their first match, and Duc Duong coming for Bao Khanh and Hong Minh.
Meanwhile, coach Peter Withe of Indonesia made seven changes after a 2-0 defeat to Olympic Cameroon.
The hosts started the game with a great determination as they needed three points to keep their hope of winning the tournament alive after the defeat to Olympic Finland in the opening match.
The Vietnamese side launched attacks after attacks after kick off, but they failed to crack the Indonesian defence.
One minute before halftime, Anh Duc missed a good opportunity to fire home the opener. The ball fell onto Anh Duc”s path after the Indonesian defenders failed to clear the ball but the striker”s hesitance gave time for an Indonesian defender to clear.
Ten minutes into the second half, Duc Duong headed home the opener after Minh Chuyen”s far post corner.
Striker Cong Vinh squandered two good opportunities after Duc Duong”s goal. In the first attempt, Cong Vinh was released by Thanh Binh, who came for Anh Duc, but failed to beat Kartiko when he was one-on-one with the Indonesian goalkeeper.
Before coming out, Anh Duc was unlucky as his header hit the post after Cong Vinh”s cross.
Minutes later, Cong Vinh was unable to net after being set up by Duc Duong.
With three points from the match, Under-23 Vietnam have restored their hope of winning the tournament.
On November 19, Under-23 Vietnam will play Olympic Cameroon, while Indonesia will play Olympic Finland.
In an earlier match of the second match day, Olympic Cameroon were held to a 0-0 draw by Olympic Finland.
Despite having more possession time, Olympic Cameroon were unable to crack a solid and well-organised defence of Olympic Finland.
After two matches, Olympic Cameroon occupied the top spot with four points. Olympic Finland have also four points but are led by goal difference.
