The Vietnamese women”s football team failed to upset the Republic of Korea at home, going down 2-1 despite a 1-0 lead in first half through skipper Kim Chi”s goal.

Kim Chi headed home the opener after 24 minutes but the Koreans fought back in the second half. They levelled the score with Jin Yo Yun finding the net in the 56th minute. Ji converted a spot kick, sealing a 2-1 victory for the Koreans four minutes later.

SMy players played well in the first half, but they tired in the second and it was understandable that we lost. The Korean players have better physical form and fitness,⬝ Vietnam coach Ngo Le Bang commented after the match.

The Vietnamese side started their second match at the 2008 Olympic Games qualifying group stage after a 2-0 defeat in Japan.

They started well, dominating the game in the first ten minutes, before the Korean visitors found the pace of the game. Goalkeeper Kieu Trinh made several good saves to deny the visitors.

The home side took a 1-0 surprise lead. Skipper Kim Chi met Van Thi Thanh”s corner, beating goalkeeper Kim Jung Mi in the air to head the ball into the unguarded net.

The Vietnamese side fought hard to defend their lead and maintained it until half-time.

Ten minutes into the second half, Yo Young A”s cross from the right flank beat goalkeeper Kieu Trinh before being met by Ji So Yun, who headed home the leveller 11 minutes into the second half.

Four minutes later, centreback Dao Thi Mien fouled Kim Joo Hee in the box, and Ji made no mistakes converting a penalty kick.

It was the second defeat for Vietnam. They lost 2-0 to their hosts Japan in the first match. Therefore, they have almost been eliminated from the Olympic Games qualifying stage, sitting rock bottom of their group.
