Winning 1-0 in Haiphong on June 3, the Vietnamese women”s team (red in the photo) yesterday failed to secure another victory, losing 5-0 to their Thai rivals in the second leg in the second qualifying round of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

It was an unexpectedly heavy loss meaning the Vietnamese team didn”t ever have the opportunity to celebrate a goal.

The Thai young rivals started the game at a fast tempo, forcing the Vietnamese team to fall back in defence in a very hot conditions.

Vietnam a very good chance in the third minute as Tuyet Mai found herself with just the goalkeeper to beat. Her indecisiveness allowed a Thai defender to prevent her shot with a push which could have been resulted in a penalty.

Later, Vietnam came under sustained attacks from their Thai rivals who made full use of their opportunities, going on to win 5-0.

It was a surprising loss because Vietnamese women players have always been considered the strongest in the Southeast Asia region. Of course, the Vietnamese women”s team”s hope to enter the qualifying round of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is already over.

Secretary General of the Vietnam Football Federation, Tran Quoc Tuan said that there should be adjustment and supplement to help the team perform better in the 24th SEA Games.
